Personal and Professional Development
“You may not be thinking too much about life after university yet, but it doesn't hurt to pick up a few skills to make your resume stand out from the others.” Peter Howell, Past student and Senior Employee Relations Officer, Coles Myer
These days you need more than a degree to build a career. Leading companies and recruiters are always looking for graduates with the personal skills that ensure eventual promotion into leadership roles.
They are looking for those with the potential to lead a team, impress clients and handle a solid and varied workload effectively. St Hilda’s will help you develop these skills through the College Personal and Professional Development Program.
Some people are born leaders. They are the ones that are chosen to be the school or sporting captains. However, if you are not one of these, there is plenty of opportunity to learn.
Every year a week-end Leadership Conference brings together representatives from organisations such as the National Bank, Ernst and Young, Anderson Consulting, Toastmasters and Covey.
The conference offers College members the opportunity to develop teamwork and leadership skills with sessions facilitated by professionals from the Melbourne business community.
Seminars and workshops provide a structured approach to leadership training, and encourage strong bonds between the College and Melbourne’s professional organisations.
Students receive training in areas such as Public Speaking, Group Dynamics, and the difference between Management and Leadership. In all topics, there is a balance between theory and practice
St Hilda’s College alumni also assist on the weekend by facilitating Mock interviews and Public Speaking activities.
“From a students’ point of view they are quite vital..." Laura Nash, Student Club President 1999 and President of the Alumni Association 2000
St Hilda’s holds various Faculty and Professional Dinners throughout the year. These are dedicated to a particular discipline studied by a group of our 2nd and 3rd year students. The Faculties of Arts and Science have been nominated for Faculty and Professional Dinners in 2nd Semester 2000.
The dinners are intended to strengthen the bonds between the academics of Melbourne’s universities; alumni and friends of the College who are successfully established in these professions, and our students. They provide insight into the career opportunities available in these disciplines and the opportunity to learn from the experience of others.
Students are invited to participate in these dinners along with high profile university academic staff and friends and alumni of the College who are prominent in these professions.
We aim to assist our students make the transition from student to professional life.
We currently provide the contact information of alumni available to speak to students about their profession. Our Leadership Program and Faculty and Professional Dinners Program provide our students with the opportunity to meet with professionals in their chosen field and learn from their experience.
