(L-R) Mrs Barbara Green with The Hon. Sir James Gobbo.
The Marjorie Smart Memorial Lecture
The Marjorie Smart Memorial Lecture is delivered each year by the college’s Marjorie Smart Fellow. The Fellow is appointed each year from a variety of professional and academic disciplines.
The lecture is attended by members of the university community, and is part of The University of Melbourne’s Public Lecture Series.
Our Marjorie Smart Fellow also spends about a week in the College, discussing pertinent issues with students and tutors.

About the Marjorie Smart Fellowship
The Marjorie Smart Fellowship was established following the death in 1982 of the first Principal of the College. Before her arrival in Australia and also prior to her appointment as Principal, Mrs Smart had worked for the Canadian Foreign Service and for the United Nations.
Those who knew her have clear memories of her friendship, sense of humour, concern for students and her vision for this College. She was determined that St Hilda’s should have something distinctive to offer its members and should make its own contribution to the University of which it was part. Marjorie Smart introduced many of the values, which are central to the Communitas we enjoy today.
A significant feature of her time as Principal was the guests she invited to the College, men and women who were prominent in the community. For this reason, it was most appropriate that the College chose to remember Mrs Smart by establishing a Fellowship that enabled eminent people from Australia and overseas to visit St Hilda’s and make a contribution to our community. Their lectures have covered a wide range of topics from Maritime Law, developments in South Africa, Wik and reconciliation.
