Richard Keene

Chemistry through the looking glass

An object and its mirror image are similar in many ways, but may not always be identical - a right and a left hand are a case in point. Consequences of such “handedness” or “chirality” are seen in architecture, magic, in nature, chemical reactions and medicine.

The seminar took light-hearted look at examples of chirality, and show how the concept is important in nanotechnology in the design of new materials with special applications in areas such electronics, solar energy conversion and artificial enzymes.
